Petrichor (smell of rain), 2026
wood, aluminum, marker, spray paint, enamel paint, salt
12 x 8 inches
Derived from the Greek petra (stone) and ichor (the blood of the gods), petrichor is the earthy scent of rain striking dry soil. This wall sculpture, a core component of my thesis, liberates letterforms from their traditional linguistic roles to map invisible atmospheric and neurological energies. I drew a storm of raindrops over raw aluminum, and spray-painted enamel clouds. Rising from cold ground is a hybrid cluster of letterforms, encrusted with salt and enamel. Drawing from my experience as a bilingual person, this chaotic alphabet represents the rapid bursts of energy our neurons fire during the split-second act of translation.
